Paekakariki Escarpment Track

Just an hour from Wellington is Paekakariki Escarpement Track, 9km long walking trail high above Kāpiti Coastline.

We love spending time in nature and we love that it is so easy to find an amazing track wherever we are in New Zealand. We took a train from Wellington Station to Pukerua Bay and from there we walked to Paekakariki. It takes around 3-4 hours to complete this trail.

The highest point of the track is on 220m and to get there you need to scale around 1200 steep steps. I have to say, it was a bit challenging but it was well worth it as once we got up there we were treated to some spectacular views! A sunny day with no wind was perfect. The track is really exposed so I wouldn’t recommend going there on a windy day, especially knowing how windy it can get around here. Check the weather forecast before you start the walk!

It’s so exciting to walk across the swing bridge while it moves under your feet! There are two swing bridges you need to cross along the way. Don’t look down if you are afraid of heights.

If you are in Wellington and looking for a great walk I would definitely recommend this one! Just follow the signposts and enjoy the view of the beautiful Kāpiti Coast.
