Skiing on Mt Ruapehu

I don’t really know how to ski but I like being up in the mountains!

Ski season in New Zealand typically starts in June and ends in October and snow activities are pretty popular among young and old.

This year we will swap mountain peaks for the Mediterranean, as we are getting ready for our European trip, but here are the photos from our last mini-break on Mt Ruapehu.

There are a few ski fields in NZ and most popular are Remarkables in Queenstown, Cardrona in Wanaka, Mt Hutt in Canterbury and Whakapapa and Turoa on Mt Ruapehu.

Whakapapa ski field is closest to where we live so we like to go there for a day trip, to breath in that fresh mountain air and enjoy the winter scenery.

There is a great beginners track for those who want to learn as well as intermediate and advanced tracks for those who know how to ski.

Mt Ruapehu is North Island’s highest peak at 2,797m. If you are not into skiing or snowboarding come here for a sightseeing. Take a ride on the Sky Waka gondola and check out the beautiful view from the top. If you buy a ski pass this will be included in your ticket.

The gondola will take you to 2020m above sea level. The scenery is wonderful and from up there, on a nice day, you can see Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe volcanoes. Grab a coffee from the eatery located on the edge of the mountain and enjoy the view!
